The important distinction

Food-contact suitability belongs to the complete package.

No single paper, film, ink, adhesive, or coating should be treated as “food safe” in isolation. Suitability depends on the complete construction and how it will actually be used.

Direct contact requires a more specific review.

The food type, contact side, duration, temperature, storage, moisture, oil or grease exposure, and any functional barrier all matter.

Applicable customer, retailer, regulatory, testing, and documentation requirements should be identified before the construction is approved. Some applications may require validation by a qualified packaging or compliance resource.

Before anything is specified

The use case determines the build.

A bakery sleeve, frozen-food carton, snack pouch, jar label, and retail sample kit can require very different materials and production paths.

Dry, moist, oily, acidic, frozen, refrigerated, shelf stable, hot filled, or otherwise sensitive to its packaging environment.

A coating is not a compliance shortcut. Protective performance and food-contact suitability are separate questions. The coating, printed side, substrate, inks, adhesives, barriers, and final construction still need to be evaluated for the intended application.
